Our first House to House Cycle

On the 1st - 4th August, 8 cyclists took on the mighty challenge to cycle from Honeypot House, New Forest to Honeypot Pen y Bryn, Mid-Wales. 2 cyclists joined the first leg to Salisbury! The 225 miles were tough for all, with professionals Pie leading cyclists of all standards, from leisure cyclists to professional athletes. All in aid of Honeypot’s young carers.

The route

The ride included 2 full days of riding and 2 half days of riding, with overnight stops near Salisbury, Gloucester and Ludlow.

The Team

There was an amazing team of cyclists supporting Honeypot, all led by John Pocock, Honeypot’s Patrons Club Chair. Some included former runner and gold medalist, Julian Goater. Sir Jim Smith, an Emeritus Scientist and President of the Zoological Society of London. Dr Mike Taylor, Lead GP for the Bristol Homeless Health Service. Plus, Honeypot’s own Finance Director, Phil Gelhorn and influencers Travis and Sigrid for day one, see more of their journey here.

Young carers

Before setting off, each cyclist was paired with one of Honeypot’s young carers who are currently looking after a loved who is sick or poorly. A photo of the child with their name and a bit about their story was gifted to them as a keepsake on their long journey. See more on some of the young carers stories such as Tali, Mia, Brodie, Micaela, Leah and Holly.

I was matched with Mia, 10. She cares for her two older brothers who live with a life limiting condition. They are wheelchair bound and need around the clock care. I will keep her picture close to me throughout the cycle to give me plenty of encouragement.

The route was beautiful with many scenic viewpoints. The team enjoyed the comradery of being together and motivating each other, along with the cafe stop offs along the route of course!

The Finish

The team had a warm welcome from everyone, including 5 young carers at Honeypot Pen y Bryn, Wales after 4 long days cycling 225 miles!

We are immensely grateful to all the cyclists for taking on such an ambitious cycle. John Pocock came to us with a vision and I’m so happy it came to life! We hope that this will be the first of many House to House cycling events to come and we invite anyone and everyone to join us.

A massive thank you to all volunteers, Pie, and the Honeypot Team for supporting this amazing project!
