The Great British Pizza Off

Here at Honeypot we are constantly thinking of innovative ways how to help our young carers socialise with peers, and how to bring something enjoyable and creative into their day-to-day lives during the Covid-19 crisis.

As we all know, The Great British Bake-off is a massive hit with families around the UK. As part of our virtual workshop programme, we decided to hold our own virtual bake-off this weekend, with pizza being voted in as this week’s cooking creation. It felt like a great solution to lockdown restrictions on a cold autumn day, and everyone was excited to put on their culinary caps and get stuck in.

Nikita and Kirsty, our two team leaders running the workshop, told us how they organised it:

“All parents were sent a guideline for the workshop the week before, listing all ingredients and equipment needed as well as a step by step running of the workshop, highlighting any risks that would need assessing by the parent/guardian.

The first part of the workshop was the designing stage. Just like the TV programme, the children got to work designing their masterpieces. They were asked to come up with a name and design for their pizza; they all labelled their toppings, coloured in their pizzas and made a detailed poster off their work. Of course, we had the debate of 'does pineapple belong on pizza?!' which brought a lot of laughter and opinions!

We then moved onto the fun part: READY, STEADY, BAKE!

Some children used pizza bases or bagels instead of wraps, and all toppings were different! One girl even spelt out 'I heart Honeypot' with her wrap. The ideas and effort that went into producing these pizzas were truly amazing. The children interactive well with each other, quickly started bonding, laughed and complemented each other's work. It’s an amazing opportunity for them to take a break from their usual caring routines and have fun with other children, and we are sure it wasn’t the last Pizza Off workshop we organise during lockdown.”
