Our Pizza Pinwheels extravagaza

While we are counting down the days until residential Respite Breaks resume in August, we keep hosting a range of engaging and educational digital workshops for our young carers.

Last week, a group of children put their culinary skills to the test for a Pizza Pinwheel extravaganza. Urging them to delve deep into their creative side, we helped them learn some new techniques that would aid them in the kitchen and make a yummy meal for the whole family. Pizza is always a go-to, but even more so if made from scratch.

Our Children’s Services Leader Kirsty, who led the workshop, was really excited when she told us about it the morning after: “This session was an adventurous bake, and I’m still proud how well these pizzas turned out! Homemade pizza dough is so much tastier than the shop-bought, and it’s surprisingly easy to make! It’s great to see how many workshops we can successfully run online, and how well the children engage. We played a few games while we set the dough aside to prove. Then gave it a roll and topped it with our chosen, favourite pizza toppings before cutting it into pinwheels. Of course, sprinkling EXTRA cheese on top!

The children really enjoyed this workshop and they were all so eager to give it a taste test. At the end, we sat down with a plate of pizza each and had a taste while chatting what has been going on for them over the last few weeks, and how they can’t wait to return for a Respite Break at one of the houses soon. It was smiles and thumbs up all around, and I’m sure it wasn’t the last pizza workshop we’ve hosted.

It is so nice to see how the children have grown in confidence, and how they’ve gotten to know each other as well as staff over the last few months. The workshops are a great opportunity for the kids to catch-up and do something fun in a social and relaxed atmosphere. And their baking skills are also top-notch now!

Next on the agenda? We are baking cinnamon rolls and an intriguing chocolate cake called ‘chocolate crunch’ this coming weekend, and we can't wait.”
