Honeypot’s History
Founded on 13th April 1992 by Lisa Stratton (nee Nelson), to realise a childhood dream of helping children who had not enjoyed the childhood advantages which she had, The Nelson Trust was originally set up “for the relief of children who are handicapped, ill or otherwise in need by providing holidays for such children in residential homes to be established and maintained by the Trust”.
In 1996, following the purchase of the first house in the New Forest, the Charity’s name was changed to the Honeypot Home Charity and the objects widened to improve “the quality of life for under privileged children”. Many of the children came to the house for holidays from the East End of London. In 1999 the name was shortened to The Honeypot Charity and later changed to The Honeypot Children’s Charity.
In the early 2000s in became clear that a particular group of “underprivileged” children, young carers, who had largely remained “under the radar” were desperately in need of support and the Charity has concentrated on this group ever since. The Charity now supports over 3,500 young carers annually, raising the profile of young carers and growing to provide a wide range of services including residential breaks in houses located in the New Forest, mid-Wales and South-West Scotland.
